A Critical Knowledge Gap in the Industry

Millions of Affected Homes

Millions of UK properties have cavity wall insulation installed — and a significant number have defects, debris, or failures that go undetected for years, leading to damp, mould, and structural damage.

Hidden Failures

CWI defects are rarely visible externally. Without invasive borescope inspection, failed insulation, mortar snots, and cavity bridging go unnoticed during standard property surveys.

Inadequate Reporting

Many surveys rely on visual-only assessment. When CWI issues are missed, reports can understate serious risks — leaving homeowners, buyers, and lenders exposed to costly remedial works.

Real-World Consequences

Failed cavity wall insulation can cause penetrating damp, internal mould growth, thermal bridging, and deterioration of internal finishes — affecting health, property value, and insurance.

The Industry Needs Evidence-Led Surveyors

Cavity wall insulation was installed in millions of homes across the UK as part of government energy efficiency initiatives. While many installations perform as intended, a substantial number have failed — often due to poor workmanship, inappropriate property selection, or pre-existing building defects that were missed during installation.

The problem is that these failures are largely invisible. A wall can look perfectly sound from the outside while the cavity is compromised — bridged with mortar droppings, saturated with moisture, or filled with poorly installed insulation that has slumped or degraded. Standard visual surveys simply cannot detect these issues.

This course exists to close that knowledge gap — equipping surveyors and property professionals with the understanding, techniques, and evidence-based approach needed to identify properties at risk, advise clients accurately, and recommend appropriate further investigation.
